Lovran is a town and summer resort on the south-eastern coast of Istria, 5 km south of Opatija. Situated on the main road (E2, E751) Rijeka - Pula.
The town consists of the old and once fortified core on the coast and the upper part, scattered over the slopes of Gorica Hill (712 m), an arm of Mt. Učka; the coastal town core is situated on a small peninsula.
Lovran - Beaches:
Apart from the two public beaches there are many small hotel beaches. The beaches of Lovran are made by little inlets in the coast, often placed under the level of the near street. The biggest part of the beaches are made by pebbles and rocks, or terraces (characteristic of this part of the coast).
On the south, 5 km far away from Lovran is Moscenicka Draga with the most beautiful beach (pebbles) of all Riviera.
The beach Kvarner is the main beach in the municipality of Lovran, situated at the entrance to the municipality arriving from the east. The beach mostly consists of sand and concrete.

Numerous hotels and private houses designated for winter vacation and holidays have been constructed around the old coastal part of Lovran and along the road to Rijeka. Thus, Lovran represents, together with Opatija, the center of the Liburnian riviera, with landscaped parks and gardens. A long coastal promenade leads from Lovran to Opatija and Volosko.
Today it is a popular seaside resort and a national sanatorium (the famous orthopaedic hospital). The mild climate (Mt. Učka protects it in winter from the cold winds and in summer provides freshness), the lavish Mediterranean vegetation, as well as, the permanently landscaped environment make it one of the most elite summer resorts in Croatia.

Lovran - Events:
Major events are the celebration of the St. George's Day, patron saint of Lovran (in April), fishermen's feasts (from June to September), Marunada - a feast dedicated to maroon chestnut gathering (in October), International Yachting Regatta (in November).
Marunada, traditional gastronomic event (from 1973) offering assorted dishesand pastry made of famous Lovran sweet chestnuts - maruni. Besides attractive gastronomic offer, the visitors are attracted by the entertainment program ( Lovran Wind Orchestra music, folk and music ensembles from Istria and Kvarner, animators, prize competition, exhibitions...). The event is accompanied by adequate chestnut (marun) pastries in restaurants and cafés of Lovran and Opatija.
Lovran - History and Cultural Heritage:
The settlement was first mentioned in the 7th century under the name Lauriana. There are several Baroque houses on the town square along with the mediaeval city tower and the church with the Romanesque bell tower. The church of St. George from the 14th century with a Gothic vault from the 15th century was extended in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Romanesque church of the Holy Trinity is situated near the sea, restored in the Gothic style, which features the rests of Gothic frescoes from the first half of the 15th century.
