Opatija is a town, harbor, and tourist resort on the foot of Mt. Učka, situated at the eastern coast of Istria in the Rijeka Bay, 13 km southwest of Rijeka. Situated on the road (M2, E751) Rijeka - Pula.
Opatija - Beaches:
The main Opatija's beach is the famous Slatina. It is located right in the heart of the city, along Marshala Tita Street, in the close vicinity of most of Opatija's hotels. Here you can enjoy a number of aquatic activities. The beach itself is a huge concrete platform.
If you want more natural beaches while in Opatija, you have to go to Moscenicka Draga which offers one of the best beaches on the Opatija Riviera. It is a pebble beach and it gets very crowded in the high season. A bit further from this beach, there is a small, but popular naturist / FKK area.
The beach Tomaševac is settled near hotel "Ambasador" in Opatija. The beach is mostly made of sand and concrete and it is situated bellow the main road promenade.
Rather than walk along the busy sidewalks, you may choose to stroll along the famous beachside promenade - Lungo Mare, a beautiful cobblestone walkway that extends from Opatija on to Icici and Lovran. You can walk the whole way along the sea side. It's lovely! The walking path is paved, in whole its length, and offers enjoyable moments of tranquility and romance.
Opatija - Accommodation:

Opatija - Excursions:
Učka Nature Park - Učka Nature Park is characterised by an exceptional variety of features in a comparatively small area. Učka is probably the only place in the world where one can take a photograph of the endemic bell-flower Učkarski zvončić (Campanula tommasiniana) and one of the last European locations where patient bird watchers will be rewarded with impressive glimpses of the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) or golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). These species are two outstanding representatives of the ornithological life to be found on Učka, which includes more than 70 nesting birds and many other birds that occasionally visit this mountain.
Within only a couple of hours, any one of the park’s numerous hiking trails will take you from the picturesque Mediterranean architecture of the coastal cities through the wooded slopes of Učka mountain up to its highest peak, Vojak, at a height of 1,401 meters. At the summit, a belvedere in the form of a medieval tower offers breath-taking view in all directions: the Istrian peninsula, the islands of the northern Adriatic, the mountains of Gorski kotar, Venice, the Italian Alps.
However, no picture of Učka could be complete if we left out the human heritage: the discoveries in a few of its caves providing clear evidence of the unbroken continuation of life in the region dating as far back as 12,000 B.C. Besides this rich archaeological heritage, very interesting also is the architectural and cultural heritage, as well as the region’s local traditions and cultural events. Here you will find good opportunities for entertainment and many chances to try some of the culinary specialities based on chestnuts, asparagus and other local health-foods.
Opatija - Entertainment:
Very many events in Opatija have a long tradition and offer a high-level entertainment: carnival (January/February), International Yachting Regatta (in May), the Opatija Yachting Cup (in November). Opatija is also one of the most important congress centres in Croatia.
Opatija - History and Cultural Heritage:
Named after the Benedictine abbey of St. James first mentioned in 1449. Between 1560 and 1723 owned by the Augustinians from Rijeka, and since 1774 a property of the chapter of Rijeka. The present chapel of St. Jameswas built in 1506 and extended in 1937. The beginnings of tourism in Opatija are linked to the completion of the road to Rijeka (1843) and construction of Villa Angiolina. In the mid-1880s several large hotels, boarding-houses, villas, summer mansions, sanatoriums, pavilions, public beaches, promenades and parks were built.
