Solta is an island in the central Dalmatian archipelago, west of the island of Brac; separated from the mainland by the Split Channel, from the Drvenik islands by the Solta Channel, and from the island of Brač by the Strait of Split.
Population: 1,448.
The largest coves, Rogac and Necujam, are situated on the north-eastern coast, covered with thick shrubs and exposed to northerly winds (especially the bora). The coves and inlets on the western coast are protected by the small offshore islets and cliffs; the Maslinica cove, exposed only to north-westerly winds, represents a favorable anchoring ground and shelter for smaller yachts.
Larger villages (Grohote, Gornje Selo, Srednje Selo, Donje Selo) are situated in the island's interior. Chief occupations include farming, wine production, olive growing, fruit growing, fishing and tourism. The regional road runs along the island; ferry ports are in the coves of Rogac, Necujam and Stomorska.
Solta - Necujam village:
The youngest village of the island, founded by building summer houses but also by planned hotel building, Nečujam is the largest and according to some the most beautiful cove of the island. It is the center of the island’s tourism and with its apartment village it offers a pleasant holiday to different types of tourists and a lot of them are traditional visitors for decades.
Today Nečujam is a modern tourist village that is during season connected to Split a few times a day.
You can find accommodation here at the Tourist Settlement Nečujam Center.
The ferry docks twice a week and it is connected to other parts of the island by bus and taxi lines. Nečujam is the center of Šolta’s tourism for the very reason of the apartment village that is a part of it.
Solta - Beaches in Necujam:
The beach in Nečujam is the largest on the whole island. It was artificially pebbled (according to the research small pebbles are the best to lay the beach with). The beach is regularly maintained and cleaned and there are also showers, two beach buffets, water slide, rent-a-boat, fast-food, tennis courts, and table tennis.

Solta - Stomorska village:
It is the oldest coastal village of the island that traces back to 17th ct. It is situated at the foot of sanctuary of Our Lady of Stomorija (St.Maria) or Our Lady of Pines (Gospe od Bori).
Today it is a tourist village with many cafés, taverns, apartments, motor camp, and a hotel "Olint".
Because of its attractive location on the slopes of the mount the village is very attractive and it is also very well known for its summer fishermen parties. Beside Nečujam, Stomorska represents the greatest tourist potential of the island.
Connection with Split is very good so during the season a ferry and a catamaran land twice a week while a passenger boat lands a few times a day. This is a village with the largest number of cafés on the island so you won’t lack night entertainment. Mostly you can choose between pizzerias, taverns with live music or a modern disco-bar.
Beaches in Stomorska:
Most of the swimmers go to one of numerous rocks by the shore that are very convenient for swimming. You can walk to nice flat stones or cliffs where you can enjoy your privacy. The main beach is near the center of the village and it is graveled.
Solta - Maslinica village:
Maslinica is the village on Šolta situated in the cove of the western part of the island. It has beautiful scenery of picturesque cove and pinewood in the southern side and also of its well-protected cove of Sesul and archipelago of seven islands.
Today Maslinica is very attractive for tourists who want complete peace during the day and night. Ferries and boats don’t come here so Maslinica is connected to Split through Rogač.
Solta - Beaches in Maslinica:
Since Maslinica is a traditional village, a modern beach with tourist attractions doesn’t exist here. In the cove of Tepli Bok there is a smaller beach, but the main beauty of this village is that in any cove you can find a solitary place for swimming.
Solta - Rogač village:
Rogač is the main port of the island but also a tourist village. Harbor master’s office Split, gas station and beautiful coves (Banje, Kasjun, Zustova and others) are a good premise for development of nautical tourism.
As the main port Rogač it is daily connected to Split with a few ferry and catamaran lines and with the rest of the island it is connected by taxi and by bus. Private apartments, catering service in Rogač and untouched nature offer you a possibility to enjoy your holidays.
Solta - Beaches in Rogač:
The beach in Rogač is called Banje. But Šolta’s characteristic is the fact that any rock is a potential place for taking a bath. So many people decide to take a place for sunbathing and swimming on numerous rocks by the sea. We recommend walking to nearby flat stones where you can enjoy in privacy.

Solta - History:
The island was first mentioned by Pseudoscylax (4th c. BC) under the name of Olyntha. The Romans called it Solenta, and in the Statute of Split (14th c.) it was called Solta. - The island has revealed the ruins of a prehistoric settlement (hill-fort Gradac) and another one from the Roman period (Rogac, Grohote, Necujam). When the Slavs and Avars destroyed Salona at the beginning of the 7th century, a group of the refugees from Salona fled to Solta. In the Middle Ages the island was attacked on several occasions by Omis (1240) and Venice (1387 and 1418). Mediaeval monuments are found on the localities in Sveti Mihovil in the Grohote Field, Donje Selo, Necujam and Stomorica above Stomorska (the Benedictine monastery). On the fall of Klis (1537) the island was inhabited by the refugees from the mainland.
