Vela Luka is a town and port on the western side of the island of Korcula, 45 km to the west of the town of Korcula. The major part of the town spreads over the slopes of Spilinski Rat (150 m) and the mildly descending plateau between the Rat and the Humic elevation (183 m).
The regional road connects major places on the island. Ferry lines connect the island of Korcula with the mainland.
Chief occupations are farming, wine production, olive growing and processing, fruit growing, fishing, fish and food processing, shipbuilding and tourism.
The coastal strip including the small islands (Proizd, Kamenjak, Osjak and Gubesa) represents a rich fishing ground. Vela Luka lies on the regional road running along the island. Ferry port; ferry connections with Split and Lastovo.
Apart from intact nature, Vela Luka offers its visitors all other advantages of modern tourism, from quality accommodation, over the variety of restaurants offering seafood and quality wines, to sports and recreational facilities (tennis, yachting, surfing, etc.) and entertainment.
Vela Luka - Beaches:
"Bili Boci" are the three most beautiful beaches near Vela Luka, and are located on the northern side of the island. There are several walking paths leading to them. From here stretches a beautiful view of the island of Hvar and the open sea.
There are two public beaches in Vela Luka. One of them is just outside Posejdon Hotel, and the other is in Plitvine cove in front of Adria Hotel. The public boat ferries several times a day during the summer months.
Most coves surrounding Vela Luka offer numerous smaller and larger beaches where you can swim and sunbathe and relax. You can access by car or boat and for more detailed information contact the nearest tourist office or the local tourist agencies.

Vela Luka - Excursions:
The island of Proizd is a small island only a 30 minute boat ride from the town center known for its' beaches and turquoise sea. There is also a nudist beach located on Proizd.
The island of Ošjak is characterized by peace, tranquillity and simplicity so it is no wonder that its visitors have been calling it Love Island for decades.There is a walking path leading through a dense pinewood covering the entire island, so you can walk to easily accessible rocks and places where you can sunbathe, swim in the sea and relax. Ošjak is only a ten-minute boat ride from the Vela Luka town centre.
During the summer months there are organized tours to both islands and the boat ferries across several times a day. You can access the islands on your own, by your own boat, a taxi-boat, or you can rent a boat from the local tourist agency.
Vela Luka bay consists of many more or less approachable coves. The shore is rocky with many pebble and sand beaches and the sea is clear.
Vela Spila cave - The entrance to the cave is 1 to 10 meters wide, up to 4 meters high, facing south and offering a beautiful view of a large bay, fruitful Blatsko Polje, the islands of Ošjak, Kamenjak and Proizd, as well as of more distant islands like Vis, Sušac, Sv. Andrija, Biševo and the open sea.
You can visit the cave in two ways: By car down a 2,5 km road leading from Kale cove to the cave, or on foot along a walking path on the Pinski Rat Mountain.
Vela Luka - Events:
The St. Joseph's Day (19th of March) is a traditional feast, accompanied by religious and cultural events and programs.
The summer period starts on June 24, on St. John’s day, and is celebrated by a traditional boat race from Gradina cove to the town centre. During the summer months, the rich entertaining program enables all visitors of Vela Luka to enjoy the weekly performances of the folk group "Kumpanija", vocal singing, exhibits of local and other artists, fishermen evenings, and various concerts of pop and classical music.
In addition to that, there is also a disco and numerous bars where you can enjoy the occasional concerts of popular singers and bands, domestic and foreign.
The international swimming marathon has been successfully organized for the last seven years in a row, on the third Saturday in August, attracting more and more contestants each year – all those who have a taste for the adventure and challenge and would like to swim the route of 4,5 kilometres! Prize money is also a challenge, and is awarded to the three best ranked contestants. Special prizes are awarded to women, as well as recognitions and awards for the youngest and oldest contestant of the marathon. So far, the contestants have been women and men, children and adults, professionals and amateurs, and the day of the Vela Luka marathon ends with a lovely supper where everyone can meet and have fun – contestants and organizers.
Vela Luka - History:
There is a prehistoric archaeological site Vela Spilja (Neolithic). - The one-nave church of St. John in the region of Gradina was first mentioned in the 15th century; it has a bell tower on the main front ("na preslicu"), and a Gothic vault. The parish church and the belfry were built in neo--historicist style.
The Cultural Centre is located in the town centre, next to the parish church of St. Joseph, and it consists of a museum, a gallery and a library, and the wealth and diversity of Vela Luka’s history, art and cultural heritage is shown through several valuable museum collections; the archaeological collection, the gifted international collection of drawings, graphics and small sculptures and the collection of ship models carved in wood.
