The historic core lies on a small peninsula, surrounded by partially preserved mediaeval walls and towers. Houses and palaces with architectural details from the 15th to the 18th centuries have been preserved; Rigo Palace, with an adorned Baroque portal and a distyle (1760) represents a valuable monument.
The parish church of St. Pelagus, once a cathedral, has maintained its basic structure of a Romanesque basilica, even after Baroque interventions in 1746-1775. The collection of stone monuments (on the ground-floor of Rigo Palace) includes numerous monuments from the antique and mediaeval periods (arches of a stone ciborium).
A three-nave church of St. Agatha with three semicircular apses is situated on the cemetery; dates back from the 10th/11th centuries. - On the Karpinjan peninsula, north of Novigrad, there is a country mansion (stanzia) of Carlo Riga built in 1762, with the view on the fields and the sea.
